‘At 39 next season, Time to go? Thiago Silva reacted to Chelsea’s contract decision ahead of next season
Thiago Silva, who had left Paris Saint-Germain as a free agent at the age of 35, signed for Chelsea.
The Brazilian is still an important player for Chelsea at the age of 38.
Silva’s contract ends at the end of the current campaign, and it’s unclear whether the team will extend it when he is 39 the following year.
The seasoned defender has stated he is not considering a deal and will speak with the team when the time is right. Before coming to a decision, Silva said he’d also think about his family.
“It is not the right time to talk about new contracts. For me, what is important is to continue playing at a high level and achieve the best results,” he said.
“There will come a time when we need to talk, that could be before the World Cup or after. I have to consider my family arrangements.
“I will have to decide what to do as this is an important decision. We will see what will happen.”
For Graham Potter, Silva still has the quality to play at a high level, and it’s up to him.
“I think the decision on how long he continues playing is Thiago’s,” Potter said.
“I’ve been here three or four weeks. I see his qualities. The level he can play at, the performance levels he can reach, the amount of respect he has throughout the game is just incredible.
“So all I can do is try and help him enjoy his football here, be part of a winning team, and then the rest of the stuff is something for him and the club to think about.”
