Blues icon not hiding his desire to make shock Chelsea return
Petr Cech has insisted that he is ready to slip on his goalkeeping gloves again for Chelsea in a competitive match if they need him to.
He was one of the surprising names included in the club’s Premier League and Champions League squads as the shot-stopper retired from the game in 2019.
Cech did return to the club last year as the technical and performance adviser and played a vital role in the club signing Edouard Mendy from Rennes.
But he is in the Chelsea squad now and Petr revealed that he has been training with the senior team two or three times a week since the PL restarted last season.
In an unlikely scenario, the former Czech international could be back between the sticks for the Blues in the Premier League or the UCL and he insisted that he is more than prepared if such a situation arises.
Petr told French sports daily L’Equipe: “In fact, I started participating in training during the restart period when due to health protocols it became difficult to bring in a goalkeeper from the academy.
“If the pros needed someone in goal during a session, then I continued as needed. Today, I still train two or three times a week in order to be prepared for any unforeseen circumstances that could force me back onto the pitch.”
Quizzed if he is ready to play if needed, the Blues icon said: “Honestly, yes.
“Frank [Lampard] asked me if he could fit me into the Champions League squad, I said yes because I felt ready to play if the circumstances required me. But we all hope that it doesn’t come to this.”
Petr won four league titles and the UEFA Champions League with the west London heavyweights amongst many other honours.
