The Blues have been linked with a summer move for Bayern Munich left-back David Alaba, with Chelsea boss Frank Lampard keen on signing a left-back.
However, The 28 year Bayern Munich star can also play at centre-back, a role he has impressed in this season.
Chelsea have been given a huge boost in the race for Alaba after the Austrian international was told he is free to decide if he wants to move to the Premier League this summer.
Alaba’s deal expires in 2021, and Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge insists Bayern Munich will look to sell players now rather than see them walk away for nothing in 12 months time.
“We don’t want to lose a player on a free transfer next year – I will be very clear about that,” said Bayern’s CEO.
Quizzed on Alaba’s future, Bayern Munich head coach Hansi Flick said: “I try to support as a coach and as an advisor. Ultimately, the player has to decide what he wants. We have to respect that.”
