According to Italian publication Gianluca Di Marzio, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has made direct contact with Napoli striker Dries Mertens.

The Belgian international will be a free agent at the end of the season and he is yet to agree a contract extension with Napoli, which has encouraged the Blues to make a move for the striker.

Lampard is a fan of Mertens due to his ability to play across the front three and he has reportedly contacted the striker to identify whether he would be interested in a switch to Stamford Bridge.

Lampard is keen to add to his attacking options to close the gap at the top and he believes Mertens has the quality to play for Chelsea.

Mertens was the subject of interest from Chelsea back in January but the Belgian opted against leaving halfway through the season.

Mertens is Napoli’s joint-top all-time leading goalscorer after matching Marek Hamsik’s 121 goal record this season.
