After the first two games of the season, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has seen his team a bit more and knows more about the strength and weaknesses of his side.
One area that’s of particular interest to the Chelsea manager is the defensive midfield role.
Reports claim that Frank Lampard is unhappy with his defensive midfield options and does not see N’Golo Kante as someone who should sit in front of the defence. Rather, Lampard wants Kante to be higher up the pitch pressing and harrying the opposition side.
Lampard has been strongly linked with West Ham midfielder Declan Rice, but now The Athletic claim Lampard has changed his mind about not signing any other player and will urge the Chelsea board to make one more signing and bring in Rice. Lampard won’t want to use Rice as a defender anymore but as a defensive midfielder.
Lampard wants a force who can hold the deep midfield position and break up play, as well as offer a more physical presence and still link up with his passes from deep – a role he doesn’t think Jorginho can do.
Meanwhile, West Ham remain adamant that they won’t sell Rice to Chelsea.
