If the current football leagues get void, which is more likely than some might think, then it looks like Chelsea will still be handed Champions League qualification for next season.

There are obviously many variables and nothing is decided as of yet, but judging by the results of a latest UEFA committee meeting, Chelsea look good for their place, as confirmed by reliable Times reporter Martyn Ziegler.

Sporting merit would basically mean on league positions as things stand, and as Chelsea currently sit in 4th position, they would qualify for next seasons Champions League if the season ends now.

It would be bad news for some of their rivals though, who’s qualification for Europe’s most prestigious competition would look very unlikely under these circumstances.

As it stands, Manchester United, Tottenham, and Arsenal would all miss out on playing Champions League football next season and would have to ply their trade in the Europa League instead.
