BREAKING: UEFA ban latest Chelsea request

According to Daily Mail, UEFA have turned down requests from British clubs including Chelsea to play the national anthem before European matches on Wednesday night following the Queen’s death.

However, Chelsea, Manchester City and Rangers all play at home on Wednesday and asked to play God Save the King ahead of their various fixtures.

However, despite the country being in a period of mourning, UEFA refused ‘on the basis of maintaining a consistent pre-match ceremony with a subdued atmosphere and without any celebratory activities across all UK venues to show respect’.

UEFA also confirmed the Champions League anthem would not be played before kick-off and black armbands would be worn by teams and staff where requested.

On Wednesday, Chelsea host RB Salzburg in the Champions League with Manchester City hosting Borussia Dortmund and Rangers hosting Napoli.
