According to RAI journalist Paolo Paganini, Chelsea have launched a fresh bid for Napoli striker Dries Mertens.
With 121 goals in more than 300 appearances for the Serie A side, the 32-year-old has been one of most consistent performers in Europe and Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is keen on bringing the Belgian to Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea tried to sign Mertens during the January transfer window but the striker was reluctant to leave Napoli midway through the season as he got his eyes on becoming Napoli’s all-time top scorer.
With Mertens now Napoli’s top goalscorer with 121 goals, it is believed he is now open to joining Chelsea. The 32 year old will join Chelsea as a free agent at the end of the season and the Blues have reportedly offered him a lucrative contract.
“Mertens leaving,” he told AreaNapoli via Daily Star.
“If he went away, Napoli could place a double shot (sign two players, instead of the one attacker they’re expected to). “Inter and Chelsea have relaunched on the Belgian, offering him a higher salary.”
