Chelsea set to make versatile Bundesliga defender as their highest paid player

Chelsea will reportedly need to make Austrian defender David Alaba their highest-earning player if they are to land the Bayern Munich star in January.

The West London club are believed to be one of four teams interested in securing the services of the Austria international, along with PSG and El Classico giants Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Alaba is set to become a free agent at the end of the current campaign and therefore boasts high bargaining power, knowing that he can be signed without a transfer fee involved.

German champions have yet to rule out tying the versatile defender down to a new contract, however, German outlet Bild claims that he is demanding £350,000 a week.

That would make the 28-year-old the Blues highest earner should they persuade him to join them over the Los Blancos, PSG and Barcelona, with former Bayer Levekusen star Kai Havertz next on the list with a rumoured £310,000-a-week salary.

Alaba has spent the past decade as a first-team regular for defending German champions, making over 400 games for the reigning German and European champions in all competitions.

Chelsea are third in the Premier League table one point separating them from Tottenham Hotspur that are on the top.
