Frank Leboeuf has backed inbound Chelsea arrival Edouard Mendy to do a better job that current number one Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Kepa has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons over the past 12 months and he once showed against Liverpool at the weekend, that the pressure is getting to him and he is unable to handle it.

That has led to Chelsea making a move to bring the big Mendy into the club, with the big man reportedly agreeing a five-year contract that will cost Chelsea around £150,000-a-week. And ahead of his move to the club, Former Chelsea defender and French World Cup winner Leboeuf admitted that Kepa can no longer carry on as No.1 and backed Mendy to be a solid replacement.

‘He had a very good season at Rennes, I am very confident that he can do the job much better than Kepa and even [Willy] Caballero,’ Leboeuf told ESPN FC.

‘I don’t know if there is another goalkeeper that Chelsea could find, but for that amount of money it’s a bargain to have Mendy. ‘He’s a tall goalkeeper, very agile and I’m sure he’s going to do the job. But Kepa cannot do the job anymore, it’s over.

‘Maybe the first mistake from Frank [Lampard] is to keep on putting Kepa in goal where the guy has completely lost his confidence, I think Caballero should play,’ the French World Cup winner added.

‘He [Kepa] cannot play, his head is in a different planet, he doesn’t feel football, he doesn’t even live football, he just wondering if he’s still a goalkeeper, he shouldn’t play.’

Kepa is very unreliable right now and is costing Chelsea points, so the sooner that Mendy gets here the better, as he will ad a bit more quality between the sticks.
