Five players for Alonso’s backup reveals after failed January transfer

January transfer window has closed as The Blues are moving into the second half of the season without having found a reserve left back for Thomas Tuchel to use.

However, There are options there, and we’re very curious to see who steps up to get some of the spare minutes there.

Now, we can assume that Marcos Alonso, as the only senior and experienced left back in the squad, will continue to dominate the minutes, no matter how much Tuchel does or doesn’t like him long term.

After him, we’ve got a nice spread. Lewis Hall was promoted from the youth team for our FA Cup game against Chesterfield and did well. But he’s not a natural left back, and is just 17.

Kenedy is much more experienced, but also not a natural left back. He could take up the slack, but Tuchel hasn’t worked with him much.

Then there’s Malang Sarr – a competent and calm defender who Tuchel has had some time to work with. He’s played on the left of a back 4 in recent games, and we can see him reprising that role again in the weeks and months to come.

Finally there’s the real long shot – Dylan Williams was signed from Derby to play in the youth teams and is already making an impression there. He’s talented, young and a natural left back. But surely he’s got the longest way to go to make the first team?
