Frank Lampard explains why Christian Pulisic didn’t start against Liverpool

Chelsea fans are starting to voice their discontent over new signing Christian Pulisic being ignored and not being offered any game in recent matches.

The 21-year old started the first few games for Lampard, but after failing to really offer much at all so far, Lampard has opted to use other choices such as Willian, Mason Mount and Pedro.

Pulisic will take time to adapt to the Premier League, this is only natural. Lampard has been reassuring that there will be many chances for him to come at Chelsea this season.

But some supporters were miffed that Lampard opted to use Mount ahead of Pulisic in their 2-1 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday, due to the fact that Mount had suffered a nasty hit to his ankle just five days before in the Champions League.

Lampard didn’t bring Pulisic on during the game either, but that was largely due to having to make two forced substitutions within the first 45 minutes, and only having one sub left.

As reported by Goal, Lampard has explained why he chose Willian and Mount ahead of Pulisic.

He said:

“I have a squad to pick from, he played before that in a few games.

“Willian has come back and looked sharp and good. I decided to go with Mason today. We needed to stay strong and play Mason high up the pitch. That’s my choices to make.

“[Pulisic] will get ample opportunities. He is a young player as well. Everyone talks about Mason, Tammy [Abraham] and Fikayo [Tomori] but he is young and younger than some of them so his chances will come.”

“It is not the case [that he hasn’t settled in]. There’s Pedro, Ross Barkley and [Michy] Batshuayi on the bench.

“[Batshuayi] deserves more minutes from the way he is training, those are unfortunate choices I have to make.”
