Good fit for Potter? As Chelsea ready to make a move for €50m Italian star
The Inter Milan star Denzel Dumfries could be acquired by Chelsea for €50 million next year, according to a recent print issue of Corriere dello Sport. It is known that the Blues are eager to add the Dutch wide winger to their team in order to enhance it.
The 26-year-old has had a respectable start to this season following a few standout appearances on Inter’s right side of the midfield. In nine games this season across all competitions for the Italian team, Dumfries has scored twice and collected one assist.
The 35-time Netherlands international has performed well to average 1.1 clearances, 1.9 shots and 1.4 key passes per 90 minutes in Serie A football. He has even been accurate when distributing possession from the right flank after making 78.5% of his attempted passes in the top tier of Italian football (stats via whoscored).
Dumfries is under contract at San Siro until 2025, so it is no surprise that the Blues are willing to pay €50m for his services as Inter have no immediate pressure to cash in on him.
Is Dumfries A Good Fit For Chelsea Head Coach Graham Potter?
Dumfries can sense the danger quickly and usually clear his lines when required. He can create some inviting opportunities for his teammates in the final third and can strike the ball with power from long range.
The Dutch sensation is good enough to operate as a right-sided winger or as a right-back if needed. Hence, someone of his versatility will be a brilliant fit for Chelsea next summer.
Dumfries is good enough to serve as a good replacement for Cesar Azpilicueta who is entering the twilight years of his playing career at Stamford Bridge. The Inter Milan talent has what it takes to rival Reece James for a regular starting spot at the West London club in the coming seasons. At 26, Dumfries is enjoying the peak years of his playing career. However, there are some concerns over whether he would be able to cope with the physical nature and high intensity of Premier League football.
We can expect Dumfries to increase competition for places within Graham Potter‘s match-day squad. With all things considered, Chelsea should think about going all out to bring the Dutchman to the English capital when the transfer window reopens in January or next summer.
