Frank Lampard appears to be prioritising a move for a new striker when the transfer window reopens.
A lot of the talk suggests that he is looking to bring in some extra competition for the clubs current top goalscorer Tammy Abraham, and they have been linked with both Moussa Demebele of Lyon, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of Arsenal, amongst others.
However, according to The Daily Mail, Lampard has been personally contacting Napoli forward Dries Mertens over a move to Chelsea when his contract runs out at the end of June.
He is surely looking at a few options, but it appears Mertens, who has clocked up 218 goals so far during his extensive career (as per Transfermarkt), is high up the list.
AC Milan have also been reportedly interested in Mertens, as are Newcastle.
But according to Thursday’s edition of il Corriere del Mezzogiorno (as cited by SempreMilan), Mertens is not interested in a move to Milan as he is looking to move to a club that can immediately compete at a high level.
This is a massive boost for Lampard as he can offer exactly that right now at Chelsea, above the other two clubs.
