‘He has become a better and a wiser player’ – Pat Nevin hails Chelsea player stunning performances so far

Chelsea legend Pat Nevin has hailed Chelsea goalkeeper Mendy and also pinpointed some of his attributes that have made him a top class goalkeeper.

Mendy was in top form last season, but there was still a bit of rawness in his game. His sweeper moves at times left little to be desired of and his eagerness at times (like seen against Everton last season) wasn’t too impressive.

He also often had a desire to be way out of his box at times, and once conceded from a long range finish.

But it has been a different Mendy this season. He hasn’t only grown in confidence, his decision making has also been top notch and he has by far improved from the goalkeeper we saw last season.

Nevin highlighted just how much the Senegal international has improved as he wrote in his column on the official club website: “As time has passed he has become a better, wiser and more considered player.

“The slightly over-enthusiastic sweeper-keeper moments that cropped up now and again seem to have been ditched. I still recall with a shudder that moment at Sheffield United back in February which ended up in a Toni Rudiger own-goal.

I remember it but it’s a fading, distant memory now, one that looks unlikely to be repeated any time soon with his growing ability to read the dangers in the game.

“The man to applaud first and foremost for these improvements is Edouard himself, but top-quality counselling and help in the keepers’ art is always on hand out at Cobham.”
