‘How does that work? UK government slammed for latest decision on Newcastle owner after Roman Abramovich’s sanctions
Following Roman Abramovich’s sanctions, Chelsea have been banned from selling match tickets and club merchandise. The Blues are also restricted from renewing player contracts as well as signing new players.
However, The UK government imposed hefty sanctions on Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich which are set to affect the club.
The football community on social media has been questioning whether or not there is a hypocrisy in the government’s actions.
The government have been called hypocrites for sanctioning Abramovich while allowing Saudi Arabia to buy Newcastle United despite their war in Yemen.
@Liam_O_Hare tweeted: “The sanctions on Roman Abramovich and Chelsea really do make the decision to allow the actual Saudi regime to own Newcastle even more appalling. This should be a seminal moment of change for football, not a rare show of principle at the whim of government foreign policy.”
@RickyDHale tweeted: “So Abramovich is not allowed to own Chelsea, but a Saudi crown prince is allowed to own Newcastle Utd? How does that work?”
@CfcSheikh tweeted: “Roman Abramovich’s been sanctioned for alleged close links to Putin. But Saudi Arabia is supported by UK arms to conduct genocide in Yemen. To make it worse the state of Saudi Arabia recently purchased Newcastle. The hypocrisy of the UK government is unreal.”
@zarahsultana tweeted: “I’m pleased Roman Abramovich has finally been sanctioned. Putin’s brutal war shows why his ally should never have been allowed to own Chelsea. But why doesn’t this principle apply to the Saudi regime, which was allowed to buy Newcastle even as it wages a horrific war in Yemen?”
