I almost joined Manchester city! Chelsea star reveals after latest criticism
Chelsea midfielder Jorginho is now being seen as one of the best midfielders in the world, and he is currently the UEFA Player of the Year.
Jorginho’s rise to fame has been very much deserved, and he achieved all that at the back of much criticism.
The Italy international has now revealed that he finds it unbelievable to come to terms with what he has achieved in his career.
“It’s surreal. It’s unbelievable,” Jorginho told BT Sport ahead of the Manchester City game.
“I achieved this and it’s something you work so hard for and you dream about, but to get there is a long way.
“And then you get there and you think: ‘Wow, I’m here now!’
Jorginho has overcome a difficult spell at Chelsea under Frank Lampard and is now a kingpin in the Chelsea midfield under Thomas Tuchel.
Asked what criticism annoyed him the most during his struggles, Jorginho admitted it was being called Sarri’s son and that he didn’t deserve to play for the club on merit.
He said: “That I got here because of Sarri and that, if it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be here.
“That I didn’t deserve to be at this club because I wasn’t good enough. Nah! That’s not right, I have my value.”
Jorginho admitted that he was close to signing up for Manchester City, but he’s so happy now at Chelsea.
Asked how close he came to joining Manchester City in 2018, Jorginho explained: “It was close but it didn’t happen. It’s how it works in football sometimes.
“I’m very, very happy at Chelsea. It’s a massive club and everyone here at the moment, the atmosphere is so good because everyone is humble.
“That’s why everything is going so well.”
