‘I don’t understand Chelsea anymore’: Chris Sutton stunned as another stunning player now close to join Chelsea

Chris Sutton has been left stunned after hearing that Romeo Lavia is now close to leaving Southampton for Chelsea.

The 50-year-old made the comments when speaking on BBC 5 Live’s The Monday Night Club.

What did Chris Sutton say about Romeo Lavia heading to Chelsea? Let’s take a look…

Well, the BT Sport pundit – who made 39 appearances for Chelsea – thinks the Belgium international is wrong to pick Chelsea over Liverpool.

Lavia has told the Reds that he would prefer a move to west London rather than a switch to Merseyside – according to the Independent – and Football London believe Chelsea hope to have everything finalised within 36 hours.

It comes after the Blues sealed the £115m signing of Moises Caicedo on Monday – for a British record transfer fee.

Speaking about Lavia on The Monday Night Club, Sutton said: “Lavia is an interesting one. I cannot understand why Lavia didn’t go to Liverpool, especially with Caicedo going in at Chelsea.

“I suspect he’ll be cover as much as anything, Pochettino will want strength in depth but if Liverpool had come in for him – as they have done – there is a gaping hole in Liverpool’s midfield which would suit him, so I don’t really understand why he’s going to end up at Chelsea.”

Sutton makes a good point about the £38,000-a-week Belgian, without disrespecting Chelsea.

Pochettino already has Enzo Fernandez to play alongside Caicedo, and the Argentine typically uses a two-man midfield in a 4-2-3-1 shape, although he interestingly abandoned that against Liverpool.

Therefore, Lavia certainly is not guaranteed a starting place at Chelsea, whereas the No.6 role is vacant and waiting for him at Liverpool after Fabinho moved to Saudi Arabia.
