‘I was absolutely gutted because they got Drogba’ – Former Chelsea player slams Jose Mourinho for selling him at Chelsea
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, a former striker for Chelsea, has criticized Jose Mourinho for his choice to offload him in 2004.
After joining Chelsea from Atletico Madrid in 2000, Hasselbaink had four seasons at Stamford Bridge, scoring 69 goals in 136 Premier League outings for the Blues.
When Jose Mourinho took over as manager of Chelsea, he made the decision to sell Hasselbaink.
Hasselbaink has criticized Mourinho for not giving him a chance at Chelsea because he feels they would have made a strong combination and won the Premier League together.
Speaking to Kammy and Ben’s Proper Football podcast, Hasselbaink said: “I was absolutely gutted. More gutted because Mourinho never spoke to me.
“I bet you that Mourinho had been told that I was a difficult lad, hard to work with and all that kind of stuff – which was not the case at all.”
Hasselbaink added: ‘They got Drogba – what a signing – but surely I could have featured alongside him. I’ve spoken to Mourinho, he said, ‘yes, I made a mistake there.’
“I don’t care what he said. He should have kept me and I would have had a medal.”
Hasselbaink then concluded by saying that Mourinho was never the special one for him.
He concluded: “He’s a brilliant coach, absolutely magnificent what he’s done in football, but he was never the special one for me.”
