Instead of nominating the current best goalkeeper in the world Edouard Mendy for the 2021 Ballon D’Or, the journalist are using his picture for another news entirely.
However, Blues fans were enraged on Tuesday to find out that Edouard Mendy’s face had been used in an article about Benjamin Mendy’s assault allegations.
And now the goalkeeper himself has spoken about it via his Instagram. Mendy wrote: “Sad to see that in 2021, in France as in England, for some blacks have neither first names nor distinct faces.
“These photo ‘mistakes’ sound like anecdotal, they are highly symbolic on the contrary.
“However, it is not that difficult to distinguish two faces, especially when the jersey is of a valuable help!”
Ferland Mendy of Real Madrid, who also faced the same issue, thanked Mendy for speaking out. He wrote: “Thank you Edouard Mendy! We are in 2021! STOP. It will take time but you will end up respecting us! Whether you like it or not.”
Racism in football is a huge problem and it continues to rear it’s ugly head time and again. Mendy speaking out speaks volumes about his character and strength.
