Just in: Premier League confirms fresh rule that will affect Chelsea next season
Ahead of 2022-23 campaign, The Premier League has announced that five substitutions will be allowed again during English top-flight matches.
Despite the International Football Association Board advising five substitutions be made permanent, the Premier League was the only major league in Europe still using three substitutions.
Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has been a strong advocate of five substitutions and will be glad the rule will be in place next season.
The Premier League said in a statement: “Premier League Shareholders met today and discussed a range of matters.
“Clubs agreed to change the rules relating to substitute players. From next season, clubs will be permitted to use five substitutions, to be made on three occasions during a match, with an additional opportunity at half-time. A total of nine substitutes can be named on the team sheet.”
