Lampard explains why Billy Gilmour started against Everton

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard named 18 year old midfielder Billy Gilmour in the starting XI for the victory over Everton at Stamford Bridge.

Asked prior to kick-off if it was an easy decision to hand Gilmour his first Premier League start for Chelsea, Lampard said:

“On one hand, yes, because he deserves to play; on the other hand, we have injuries and suspensions in the same area.

“But I don’t want that to be the reason Billy is playing. Billy is playing because he has trained well all season. He played very well against Liverpool and I expect more of the same today.

“He’s young and I don’t want to heap too much on his shoulders but I believe in him and in the midfield.

“We’re young in there today but hopefully we’ll have a lot of energy and quality.”
