Lampard sent shock transfer message about possible Chelsea signing of midfielder

We are interested in trying to steal Gomes away from Manchester United in the summer, as the 19-year-old is out of contract with the Red Devils at the end of June, when he will be free to leave for nothing, and has so far rejected United’s offers of a new deal worth around £25,000-a-week.

Reports suggest Gomes and his representatives are holding out for an even higher offer while he also wants assurances over first-team opportunities, given the fact that he is one of the most exciting talents at the club

However, Speaking on ESPN, pundit Gab Marcotti said it would be setting a bad precedent if they allowed the attacking midfielder to stay at the club if they didn’t feel he was worth the money and didn’t have a future in the first-team squad.

He said: “I think if you’re Manchester United, you look at this and say ‘yeah, you may be a promising player, but this is the offer. This is what you’ve shown me you’re worth’. I think a lot of these stories are coming out because he has a new advisor.

“These guys have asset value, right? In the sense that you can bump [the transfer value] up in a few years, sell them, he’s homegrown and blah blah blah.

“I don’t think that should come into consideration for United, because they’ve got money.

“Unless you think this guy is going to be able to contribute to your team and not be someone who sits on the bench for three years and you sell to Newcastle for £10million, don’t mess around with this. It sets a bad precedent.

Gomes is a very exciting player, but do we really need him?
