‘My future is at Chelsea’ – 21-year-old star who Mauricio Pochettino’s never played says he believes he has a future at Chelsea

Chelsea defender Ian Maatsen has now claimed that he still believes he has a future at Chelsea.

He told Voetbal Primeur that while is ambition is to represent his country at the upcoming European Championships, he still feels as if he can earn that through some gametime at Stamford Bridge.

Maatsen is yet to start a Premier League game under Mauricio Pochettino, which will have surprised many after the pre-season campaign he enjoyed.

The 21-year-old was one of the manager’s go to players in the system, and can’t have been far away from starting the season opener against Liverpool.

However, up to now he has been limited to starts in the EFL Cup, with many speculating his future is elsewhere.

He is so far yet to put pen to paper on a long-term contract with the club, which has opened up the possibility for his sale in order to get some decent money for him.

Maatsen believes future at Chelsea

The club accepted a bid for his services on deadline day from Burnley, although he personally rejected the move despite a strong relationship with their manager Vincent Kompany.

Now, the versatile left-back has claimed that he still believes he can break through in West London.

He said: “The European Championship, that’s what I secretly hope for. I think I have also shown myself well to the national coach during training. I also know that I have to play more for that. I still think that is possible at Chelsea.

“As a young boy you always want more. I gain confidence from the trainer’s words and I am ready when the opportunity comes.”

With the games coming thick and fast as we approach Christmas, Pochettino will be forced to utilise his squad more and more as the season goes on.

This could see Maatsen handed a golden chance that he simply cannot give up.
