Next stop Stamford Bridge? Chelsea want to sign one of the “world’s best strikers”

Chelsea have been tipped to seal the signing of Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski this summer.

Lewandowski made headlines just a few weeks ago when he revealed that his time with Bayern is up, that he wants a new challenge, and that he plans to leave the German club this summer.

Bayern will not let him go without a fight – they do not have a good successor for the 50 goals he scored last season – but speculation about where he will go continues to grow.

Barcelona are the overwhelming favourites to capture the great man, but Chelsea have also been linked with a transfer as Thomas Tuchel looks to bolster his assault this summer and replace Romelu Lukaku, who had a poor season.

In the midst of all the conjecture, pundit Noel Whelan has spoken out, claiming that Chelsea would try to recruit one of the game’s finest strikers to send a message to their Premier League rivals.

“I think Chelsea will be looking at what other teams have done with Nunez and Haaland,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“They’ll be wanting to have one of the world’s best strikers themselves.

“You can never take away what Lewandowski has done in his career. Look at Cristiano Ronaldo as well, they are pretty similar.

“They keep going, stay fit. Lewandowski is a player who will score goals if he gets the right service – there’s no doubt about it.

“But you would be paying a lot of money for a 33-year-old who would maybe only be around for two seasons.

“He’s got to hit the ground running to make it worthwhile.”
