‘Not again! Referee and VAR ref for Chelsea vs Liverpool Carabao Cup final confirmed. Chelsea fans won’t like this

On February 27 at the Wembley Stadium, Chelsea and Liverpool will face each other in the final of the Carabao Cup later this month.

However, The match officials for the game has been confirmed, and Stuart Attwell will be the referee in the middle for this heavyweight clash.

Chelsea fans will agree that Atwell hasn’t had the best of games against Chelsea, and somehow, Chelsea have struggled to win games when he is at the centre.

Check out this contrast: Of the 14 Chelsea games he has taken charge of, the Blues have won four while Liverpool have only lost once out of 15 games Atwell has refereed.

Atwell was the referee in Chelsea’s 3-0 win over Aston Villa earlier this season, the only time he has officiated a Blues game this season.

Coincidentally, Atwell was also the referee who sent off club captain Cesar Azpilicueta in last season’s 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa at the end of last season. The defender was adjudged to have struck Jack Grealish in the face and got a very questionable sending off which marred that game.

To show that the centre ref had it all wrong, the Blues appealed the three-match ban given to Azpilicueta after the game and were successful, seeing his red card overturned and the suspension that was due for the start of the 2021/22 season cancelled.

Darren England will be in charge of VAR, having previously done so for Chelsea’s clash with the Reds back in January – with the match finishing 2-2.
