Pat Nevin has moved to exonerate Thiago Silva from blame for Chelsea’s defensive woes.

Thiago Silva has come under the microscope lately after a string of errors while in action for the Blues.

The 39-year-old has just a few months remaining on his contract with Chelsea, and there is indication he might leave at the end of the season.

However, Pat Nevin doesn’t believe the Brazilian deserves the criticisms going his way, and thinks it’s okay for him to stay another year at Chelsea.

For Nevin, Thiago Silva is often a soft target for critics, as he’s soon to be 40.

“Chelsea need to use him as much as they can,” Nevin told Lucky Block, while discussing Thiago.

“It’s fine if they want to leave him out every other game or rest him when they have to, then so be it.

“He’s still capable of scoring the odd goal, his reading of the game is phenomenal, and any player who plays alongside him will listen to him.

“Silva may leave at the end of the season, but I wouldn’t be shocked if he stayed another year. Chelsea know that he won’t last forever.

“I wouldn’t, however, blame Silva for how Chelsea have at the back. He’s been anything but a problem. He’s an easy one to point to when there’s been the odd mistake, but the reality is that Chelsea’s problems don’t stem from Thiago Silva.”

Thiago Silva will turn 40 in September.
