Chelsea winger Christian Pulisic must knuckle down and focus on proving his ability to head coach Frank Lampard if the Blues sign Philippe Coutinho in the summer window.
Now we all know that Barcelona are keen to offload Coutinho at the end of the season, having shipped him to Barcelona for two years, and we also know that Chelsea are leading the chase for the Brazilian.
Why are they leading the chase you asks? that is because Willian is set to depart the club after failing to agree a new contract, while Pedro is also set to pack his bags and finish his days at the top level back in his home country.
However, the arrival of Coutinho in the summer may actually mean that Pulisic, regarded as one of the finest talents in Europe right now, may struggle for the game time that many believe he should be given.
And ahead of a possible summer arrival of Coutinho, Braig Burley has offered the American a bit of advice: “The American public should stop worrying or American soccer fans should stop worrying about whoever’s going to sign for Chelsea,” Burley told ESPN.
“Because either Christian Pulisic, like every other player, is going to be good enough to hold down a place in the team no matter who they sign, or he’s not. It’s as simple as that really.
“It’s part and parcel of the job and I don’t think the young man will be worried about who Chelsea are going to be bringing in. “I think he will be purely focused on, whenever the season restarts or when the next season starts, of showing Frank Lampard on a consistent basis the glimpses of what we saw in the last six months or so, which were pretty good.”
Yes the arrival of Coutinho to Chelsea may mean that the younger players play less next season, but it will also mean that those same players will need to step up and prove themselves to the Chelsea boss. Would Coutinho be a good signing for Chelsea? probably yes…will be be a good signing for Pulisic? probably not! But it will be interesting to see just how all of this plays out wont it?
