Following the restart of the season, clubs in the Premier League were allowed to make up to five substitutions in a match, following the lockdown period where the players weren’t exposed to much physical activities.
All 20 of the Premier League clubs were to decide on whether to continue with the system next season. A meeting was billed for Thursday in order to vote on the rule, and a supermajority of 14 teams is needed for the rule to be applicable next season.
But following a vote at today’s Premier League meeting on conference call, the majority Premier League clubs have voted against the idea.
Chelsea were among the clubs kicking for the five substitution method to continue, but It is understood some of the so-called smaller clubs in the top flight blocked keeping the rule in place as they believed it favoured those with the biggest squads.
The International Football Association Board (IFAB) last month gave leagues the green light to proposals permitting five replacements for the future.
However, UEFA has opted to return to three substitutes for next season’s Champions League and Europa League, and the EFL will follow suit.
The Premier League campaign for the 2020-21 season will start on September 12.
