English Premier League saw another big summer transfer window spending over £1 billion. Chelsea played a key part in that, spending £222 million and bringing in eight new players at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea is now operating on a very big squad in both qualities and quantities, with more than 50 registered players in their senior and youth squad. 23 players are out on loan, including some big-name senior players.
On Monday night summer transfer window closed, but the domestic window will be opened till 16th October. Chelsea will be looking to offload and loan out some players before that. In this article, we are going to look at the contracts of players who have just a year left at Stamford Bridge. A total of seven Chelsea players has entered their last year of the contract, 5 senior and 2 academy squad players.
THIAGO SILVA, OLIVER GIROUD AND WILLY CABALLERO
Chelsea signed Thiago Silva on a free transfer in this window after he was released from Paris Saint Germain. The Blues have signed him on just one year contract but have the option to extend for another year.
The 36-year-old legendary player has been his 36 but is still got the fitness to play at the highest level of the league. Premier League is one of the pacey and physically strongest leagues in the world. Silva still playing for his National Team and can play for two to three years more at this level.
Chelsea will be extending his contract at the end of next season if he succeeds in playing more than 30 league fixtures. The 34-year-old Oliver Giroud is another first-team player who has age against him but is in great shape and fitness. He extended his contract for a year for this season due to his terrific form at the end of the last season.
But due to the arrival of Timo Werner in this transfer window, he has fallen down in pecking order. Despite being in great form, Lampard is playing Tammy Abraham ahead of France international.
Giroud became 2nd all-time goal scorer for France after breaking Michael Platini’s record of 42 goals, in his 100 appearances last night. It will be hard to see Chelsea extending Giroud’s contract this season.
Willy Caballero is also facing an overloaded squad effect on his place at Lampard’s eleven. The 39-year-old goalkeeper is facing competition due to the arrival of Edouard Mendy at Stamford Bridge. Kepa Arrizabalaga recently lost his place as number one choice between posts will be a second choice keeper behind Mendy for this season. Caballero might have played his last game for the Blues and very few chances of his contract extension this season.
VICTOR MOSES, MARCO VAN GINKEL, KARLO ZIGER, AND DYNEL SIMEU
The 29-year-old Victor Moses has returned to Chelsea after his season-long loan spell with Fenerbahce. The versatile winger axed from first-team training sessions this season and expected to join Inter Milan in this window.
But lack of interest in him saw to stay at Stamford Bridge for his last year with them. He is now also been omitted from the Champions League squad, and reports suggesting that he will be joining the Championship team in the coming days.
Marco Van Ginkel just signed a one-year contract extension with Chelsea and immediately loaned out to PSV for his fourth spell. The 27-year-old Dutchman has featured four times for Chelsea in the last six years, spending most of his time away on loan.
