“Start them” “don’t bench them” “they’re important” – Potter told to start 104M duo after benching them in Salzburg draw
According to TalkSPORT analyst Gabriel Agbonlahor, Chelsea manager Graham Potter will feel pressure to play Wesley Fofana and Kalidou Koulibaly in upcoming matches due to the club’s significant investment in the duo.
Potter used both as replacements in the 1-1 draw with Red Bull Salzburg on Wednesday night, but Agbonlahor feels both players will need to play frequently after spending £104 million on them:
“He (Potter) needs to pick his best two centre-backs and just give them game time. That’s got to be Koulibaly and Fofana, the money they’ve been bought in for.”
However, It did seem as though Potter wanted to go with experience in his first game in charge but he is likely to change his plans in upcoming fixtures, once he has had more time to work with the squad.
Fofana is an extremely talented young defender, and he will definitely get a lot of match time over the coming weeks and months. There are, though, more doubts about Koulibaly.
Chelsea owner Todd Boehly has revealed that the Senegalese international is still trying to adapt to the pace of the Premier League so we shall see if Potter uses him regularly or not.
