Thibaut Courtois gets pelted with rats during the Madrid derby

Real Madrid played against Atletico Madrid at Wanda Metropolitano on Wednesday.

Thibaut Courtois travelled with the rest of the squad and started against Diego Simeone’s side but he didn’t receive a warm welcome from the Rojiblancos’ fans.

Before the kick off of the Madrid derby Atletico’s fans vandalised the Belgian’s plaque outside the stadium and wrote a ‘rat’ graffiti on it. Their reaction was due to the fact the 26-year-old goalkeeper spent three seasons on loan in Madrid after joining Chelsea in 2011.

Moreover, during the first half of the clash at Wanda Metropolitano Atletico’s angry fans pelted Courtois with toy rats.

Of course, they also whistled every time the Belgian touched the ball. That probably had an impact on the goalkeeper’s performance as he failed to keep a clean sheet.

During Courtois’ three years at Atletico, the Belgian won a whole bunch of trophies. The goalkeeper helped the Rojiblancos to lift the La Liga trophy in 2014 after sensationally securing the title in the last matchday of the season. Moreover, he also won the Copa del Rey, the Europa League and the UEFA Super Cup during his spell in Madrid.
