Tuchel and Chelsea receive ‘massive’ Edouard Mendy boost after latest AFCON decision
Chelsea play host to Liverpool on January 3, and it was expected that Chelsea would be without goalkeeper Edouard Mendy for that game, as he’d be called up for the competition.
However, The African Cup of Nations will kickstart in January, with the opening game taking place on January 9th, and it’s expected to run for a month.
Meanwhile, FIFA deputy secretary general Mattias Grafstrom has confirmed that players can only leave for the African Cup of Nations after January 3rd.
“CAF [the Confederation of African Football] has decided that for those players who have official club matches between the 27 December 2021 and 3 January 2022, the participating member associations in question are to be directed that these players may remain with their clubs to participate in these matches and be released after the last match during this period,” the letter reads.
Following latest AFCON decision, Chelsea goalkeeper Mendy will be available for the match against Liverpool on Jan 2.
In the same line, the likes of Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah will also be available for the fixture making it a very competitive game.
