(Video): Watch Raheem Sterling’s impressive Chelsea debut against Charlotte FC
In a game in which Raheem Sterling made his Chelsea debut, Charlotte FC, a newcomer to the MLS, upset the Blues on penalties thanks to a goal from Christian Pulisic.
However, Chelsea was playing in their second match of their USA Tour, having just defeated Mexican team Club America 2-1.
Following an effort from Michy Batshuayi that rebounded into his direction, American captain Pulisic scored just after the half-hour mark by deftly clipping the ball over Charlotte goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina.
Both teams made numerous adjustments in the second half, and Sterling finally appeared for the first time in Chelsea garb.
The 27-year-old made an impression with numerous thrilling runs and forward play, demonstrating to Chelsea supporters what to look forward to in the upcoming campaign.
Seven minutes from the end, Kai Havertz put Sterling in behind the Charlotte defense, and it might have been the Englishman’s fairytale debut. However, Pablo Sisniega, the substitute goalkeeper, made a strong save on Sterling’s left-footed attempt.
The Mexican striker Daniel Rios converted their MLS opponents’ penalty in the 90th minute to give the Blues their second consecutive victory on American soil.
After the game ended, there was an unexpected penalty shootout, and Charlotte won it after Connor Gallagher missed from the line and the MLS team won 5-3 on kicks.
Three days from now, Thomas Tuchel’s team will meet London rivals Arsenal to close out their tour of the United States. Kalidou Koulibaly, another summer signing, may participate in this match for the first time.
