Chelsea are reportedly interested in signing Philippe Coutinho this summer despite an underwhelming spell with both Barcelona and Bayern Munich.
The Brazilian, on loan in Germany following a disappointing stint at Barcelona since his £140million transfer from Liverpool in 2018, is not expected to stay at the Bundesliga club beyond the current season.
Chelsea have been offered his services, according to Sky Sports , and while things have been going wrong for Coutinho for quite some time, there is every chance he would be a success at Stamford Bridge.
However, A return to the Premier League, where Coutinho played his best football, would give him a tactical and psychological boost that might lead to a revival of the outstanding player we saw at Liverpool. And Chelsea is the ideal destination. Frank Lampard plays a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 formation, which both suit Coutinho, albeit in different ways.
Lampard’s expansive attacking approach means that the 4-3-3 requires one or two deeper playmakers, usually Mason Mount and/or Ross Barkley, to burst forward as the beating heart of the team. This is precisely the role Coutinho played in the Liverpool midfield towards the end of his time at the club.
In the 4-2-3-1, Coutinho would operate on the left, cutting inside to join a number 10 (Mount) and the right winger. It is worth noting that Lampard expects his wingers to play narrowly in order to dominate and overwhelm the number 10 space, but currently most of his wide men are pure dribblers who prefer to stay on the flanks.
Coutinho has the playmaking qualities, the dribbling, and the through-ball ability to weave together Chelsea attacks in new ways. They do not possess a player anything like him. And they desperately need one.
