Why I’m mentally drained – Chelsea coach finally reveals

It wasn’t an easy one match, as Chelsea played host to Manchester United on the season’s finale. Arsenal knew they could snatch the title on the final day, if they bettered Chelsea’s result.

The Blues were down in the game twice, and at half-time United were leading 2-1.

However, Chelsea women’s head coach Emma Hayes has done a profound job at the club over the years, and the team only just clinched the Women’s Super League title for a third consecutive season.

Three second-half goals sealed a 4-2 victory for Chelsea, and Hayes admitted after the game that she was drained mentally.

She told the official club’s website: “First half I thought we played with fear; second half we played to win and I have to credit the whole dressing room for switching that mentality because we knew we had something to lose.

“Once we play like we had something to win, that was the difference.

“We’re 2-1 down at home, packed house, everyone’s thinking, ‘oh no, you can’t lose the title at home’ and then we go and do that second half, we’re just amazing.”

With the FA Cup final still to play for against Manchester City next Sunday, Hayes admitted that the work isn’t over yet.

“I’m absolutely mentally drained right now,” added Hayes.

“I will just go home, have a cup of tea as usual and get ready for tomorrow.”
