‘It’s An OK match, but this happens alot’ — Tuchel finally reveals why Chelsea lost to West Ham
Chelsea started the game against West Ham top of the table, but the Blues could drop to 3rd at the end of game week 15, after a shock 3-2 defeat to the Hammers away from home.
Chelsea scored the first goal courtesy of a Thiago Silva header from a corner kick. A poor pass from Jorginho to Edouard Mendy gave the Hammers a very cheap penalty, which Manuel Lanzini duly converted just before half-time. Four minutes later, Mason Mount scored a fine volley to put Chelsea ahead.
11 minutes after the restart, Jarod Bowen drew level for the home side, and it got worse for Chelsea late in the game as Arthur Masuaku scored a fluke goal to give West Ham the victory.
Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel believes that his side played well, but blamed the defeat on individual mistakes from his players.
“I don’t think we did a bad match. An OK match,” Thomas Tuchel told BT Sport after the defeat to West Ham.
“But it’s tough to play here, and we did too many individual mistakes, and we got punished for it.
“If you want to have results at this level, you must minimise the mistakes. We talked about it before, but it obviously did not help, and that’s the story.
“[Jorginho’s backpass that led to the penalty] is not the best decision to pass the ball back, the decision making from Edouard is not the best in that moment.
“We had a lot of touches in the box but sometimes you need a bit of luck, and this we did not have.
“The third goal is a strange one. We could not finish with clear chances and struggled to be ruthless.
“We made way too many mistakes, you cannot do it at this level. We need to play more accurately, more stable, and reduce big mistakes.”
