However, The United Legend Rooney admits he changed his studs before a match against Chelsea in 2006 because he “wanted to hurt” one of their players.
A dominant Jose Mourinho’s side were 9 points clear at the top of the table, with three games to go, and Rooney just couldn’t stand watching Chelsea drift away with the title. So he opted to wear longer studs with the intention to hurt.
Chelsea eventually beat Manchester United 3-0, and Rooney’s stamp on John Terry didn’t mean a thing.
“I changed my studs before the game,” Rooney revealed in the upcoming documentary ‘Rooney’, which will be released on Amazon Prime on Friday.
“I put longer studs in because I wanted to hurt someone.”
He added: “If Chelsea won a point, they won the league,’ Rooney said during the documentary.
“At that time, I couldn’t take it.
“The studs were legal, they were a legal size, but they were bigger than what I would normally wear.”
