‘My biggest mistake in the game’ – Tuchel finally reveals his biggest mistake in Chelsea 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid
It wasn’t a poor performance from the team as Chelsea were beaten 3-1 by Real Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final tie.
However, individual errors cost Chelsea, as well as the sheer brilliance of a football legend Karim Benzema.
One thing that went against Chelsea in this game was the right flank where Vinicius ran Andreas Christensen ragged in the first half. Christensen couldn’t cope with the pace and trickery of Vinicius, and was well beaten by the Brazilian as he assisted Benzema for their first goal.
Speaking after the game, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel admitted that he made an error to put Christensen on Vinicius.
When asked about his decision to play Christensen against Vinicius in the first half before instructing Reece James to play deeper in the second half, Tuchel replied: “Yeah, it’s my mistake.
“We changed the formation and wanted to turn things around because I think personally there was enough where we could hurt them.
“But we were so far off our level in everything what the game demands, tactically, individually, in shape, in stiffness, in challenges that we tried to play in a new formation and then killed the game off with a big mistake after three minutes [in the second half].”
