I was pocket – Cristiano Ronaldo finally named former Chelsea player as his toughest ever opponent in his career
Cristiano Ronaldo, a Manchester United striker, highlighted the most difficult opponent he’s ever faced.
Cristiano Ronaldo is widely recognized as one of the best players of all time; since his debut in 2002, the Man United forward has scored over 750 goals. After impressing in a friendly match against Sir Alex Ferguson’s team, the Portuguese maestro famously transferred to Man United.
Following his debut in 2003, the prolific talisman grew in stature under Fergie’s cautious supervision, culminating in the club’s first treble and his first Balon d’Or in 2008.
Ronaldo had the misfortune of playing against some of the world’s finest defenders during his seven-year stay at Old Trafford, but there was one man who was a constant thorn in his side.
Ronaldo claimed in an interview with El Chiringuito TV in 2018 that three-time Premier League winner Ashley Cole was by far the most difficult opponent he’d faced.
The claim is all the more remarkable given that the former Real Madrid player has fought the likes of Nemanja Vidic, John Terry, and Rio Ferdinand, among others.
Despite this, Cristiano had no reservations in choosing the ex-Chelsea and Arsenal defender as his most formidable opponent. This isn’t the first time Ronaldo has praised Cole; in a 2016 interview with Coach Magazine, he said the same thing.
“Over the years I had some great battles with Ashley Cole, he does not give you a second to breathe,” he said
“He was such a tenacious player when he was at his peak, quick, tough in the tackle. You knew it would never be an easy game.”
