Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has been tipped to fund a move for Jadon Sancho by Paul Merson this coming summer.
Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has so far been backed in his quest to build one of the most exciting sides in Europe right now and already completed the kind of transfer deals that will start to worry the rest of the Premier League.
And The Borussia Dortmund winger is a dream target for a number of clubs after a brilliant campaign in the Bundesliga, where He has contributed 17 goals and 17 assists in all competitions but could still be sold if his asking price is met.
Reports have suggested that Manchester United have made Sancho their number one transfer target, But former Arsenal star Merson believes Abramovich could get his chequebook out for Sancho because of the 20-year-old’s potential resale value and entertainment value on the pitch.
“They obviously still want Jadon Sancho, and if they can’t get him they will probably try for Kai Havertz,” he told the Daily Star. “Either one of them is going to cost close to £100m. But that kind of transfer pays for itself. Chelsea could get five good years out of Sancho and still get a big sell-on.
“You’ve got every chance of getting your money back with a player like Sancho. “And if Abramovich starts coming to matches again, he will want to be entertained. He won’t care about paying £100m for a Sancho if it helps them play good football.
“Signing Werner is a big statement. But signing Sancho would be an even bigger one. “I think they will challenge now. I think they will close the gap. Abramovich believes they will be major challengers or he wouldn’t be spending the money.”
Chelsea have already signed Hakim Ziyech, and have the likes of Christian Pulisic and Callum Hudson-Odoi already at the club, so the need for a new winger is not high on the agenda anymore.
