Chelsea youngster Billy Gilmour surely didn’t have a debut he’d like to remember, after he came on late in the game against Sheffield United, only for Chelsea to draw the game 2-2 after the Blues had gone 2-0 ahead.
Gilmour was a surprise introduction just six minutes to the end of the regular time and five minutes later, Kurt Zouma’s own goal put the teams even.
Chelsea boss Frank Lampard was criticised for the substitution at the time, and Gilmour has revealed how he was raged at the end of that game.
“When the game finished I remember walking back to the changing room and I was raging,” Gilmour remembers while speaking to the club’s official website. “I was gutted at myself just because of the score.
“The gaffer texted me later saying ‘these are the moments I want you to remember. When you’re training hard, that’s what you need to bring into the games when people aren’t playing well. You need to take the good and the bad together.’
“It was a tough game. Sheffield United worked really hard. I was obviously happy that I’d made my debut but mostly gutted. My family came down to watch and they kept telling me to cheer up. They wanted to take pictures afterwards but I wasn’t really smiling because I was in a bad mood!”
Gilmour’s fortunes have since turned around after back to back man of the match performances against Liverpool and Everton, before the league was suspended.
