FINALLY: Chelsea make breakthrough in talks as key target’s asking price is slashed by £30m

According to the Football Insider, Ben Chilwell could now be sold by Leicester City for £50m, rather than his original £80m asking price.

The cost of the England international’s transfer was proving prohibitive for the Blues and they had been looking at cheaper alternatives.

Ajax’s Nicolas Tagliafico’s name has been mentioned regularly, as well as Porto’s Alex Telles and Bayern Munich’s David Alaba. Reports have also linked the London club with a move for Real Madrid’s Sergio Reguilon in recent days.

However, the Football Insider believes a move for Chilwell is back on, now that Leicester have seemingly dropped their price tag by £30m.

The website claims that the breakthrough in talks between the two parties markedly increases the chances of a deal going ahead this summer.

Manager Frank Lampard is reportedly planning a massive overhaul of Chelsea’s defence and it appears Chilwell is a key part of his plans to reshape his backline.

They could still face competition from other clubs for the 23-year-old though, with both Manchester City and Manchester United also said to be keeping tabs on the player.
