FINALLY: Lampard has confirmed £108m-Rated Uruguayan as the answer to Chelsea’s defensive woes

According to ESPN, Chelsea manager Frank Lampard firmly believes that Atletico Madrid centre-half Jose Gimenez is the man to add experience to the Blues’ backline.

A source told the website that Lampard sees the capture of the Uruguayan international as “like signing a 30-year-old centre-back.”

Despite only being 25 years of age, Gimenez has 55 caps for his country, as well as playing nearly 200 times for Atletico over the past seven seasons.

The defender does, though, have a €120m (£108m) release clause which Atletico would want to be triggered if they are to let go of the player.

ESPN also claim Manchester City have also looked at Gimenez but both Pep Guardiola and Lampard feel that Diego Simeone would fight tooth and nail to keep the centre-back at the Wanda Metropolitano.

At the moment, Chelsea’s focus appears to be on signing Kai Havertz but they may consider signing a new centre-back later in the summer if they can raise funds through player sales.
