Finally, Lampard reveals why he had to keep Giroud for another season

Chelsea have confirmed that striker Olivier Giroud will remain at Chelsea for the 2020/21 season.

This might come as a surprise to many, as the 33-year-old striker was on his way out of the club in January, but Frank Lampard chose not to let him go at the end, having been unable to sign a replacement.

Giroud was due to become a free agent at the end of the season, but Chelsea have moved to exercise the clause that will keep him at the club for another year.

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has now explained that he needed to keep Giroud for another season, due to the qualities that the Frenchman would add to the club, both on and off the pitch.

On the decision to keep Giroud for another year, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard said: “Since I have been back at Chelsea, Olivier has been brilliant as a professional and as a man in general.

“He has great qualities to help the squad both on and off the pitch, not only with his talent but with the example he sets every day and the experience he brings to our young squad. I am very pleased that will continue next season.”
