According to Sky Sports Italy, Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud is set to remain at Stamford Bridge for a further year after the club took the option to extend his contract until 2021.

However, Giroud was due to leave the club as a free agent at the end of the season and stayed in January after failed moves.

It is believed the decision to extend the contract of Giroud may have been influenced by the expected financial chaos during the upcoming transfer period.

Giroud’s deal was set to run out on June 30, but Chelsea have moved to protect the player’s value with clubs remaining uncertain over how the current pandemic will impact the market.

However, the Blues may still sanction a transfer in the event they receive a substantial offer for the 33-year-old.
