Graham Potter gives honest verdict on Chelsea Champions League qualification after 1-1 draw against Salzburg

The first game under Chelsea’s new manager Graham Potter was a Champions League match between the Blues and RB Salzburg at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea’s match against Salzburg was a crucial one, but with a tie, they are currently last in group E with one point after two contests.

If Chelsea hopes to advance to the Champions League’s knockout round, it must start winning again.

Graham Potter said following the game that Chelsea is in a challenging circumstance, but he believed the team’s talent would eventually shine through.

Potter said: “We can’t lie, it’s not the position we want to be in but we have to respond.

“It’s going to be a tough group but there’s enough quality in the team and the squad that we can respond and we have to look forward to those games.”

Potter meanwhile praised his players for the performance against RB Salzburg.

Asked what he thought about his players, Potter said: “They gave everything. We’ve only got one point so we’re disappointed with that but I was very proud with how they acted today.

“It’s not been easy for them either with a change in coach and all that comes with that but their response has been brilliant.

“They’ve acted really well – professional, honest and responsible so from an effort perspective it was absolutely 100 per cent there.

“The quality to get there often was good but we just lacked that little bit to get the second goal.”
