Following Edouard Mendy’s terrible performance against Leeds United in the first half, Chelsea supporters have urged Blues boss Thomas Tuchel to bench the Frenchman.
The 30-year-old shot-error stopper’s inside his own penalty area put Leeds ahead with ease, putting the Blues on the back foot at Elland Road.
Throughout the first quarter, the hosts had masterfully pressed Tuchel’s team, and Mendy dragged out possession of the ball inside the penalty area. Mendy was incensed when Brenden Aaronson stole the ball from the Senegal international and put Leeds ahead with a shot into an empty net.
A magnificent Jack Harrison free kick was quickly headed in by Rodrigo Moreno to extend the Yorkshire club’s advantage and make the Blues’ terrible first half even worse.
Mendy does appear to be prone to unusual blunders and gaps in focus, which has led many to doubt his role on the team. The goalkeeper has been an important member of Tuchel’s team since the German took over and played a crucial role in their 2020–21 Champions League victory.
Many believed it may be time for the Spaniard to be given a chance in goal now that Kepa Arrizabalaga, the most expensive goalkeeper in history, was sitting on the bench. Twitter was used by supporters to express their views.
