‘I got a message from Bruce Buck after that match’ — Lampard finally reveals how Chelsea sacked him

Frank Lampard lasted 18 months as Chelsea boss before being sacked. His first season in charge was quite impressive as the club sealed a top four finish despite the loss of Eden Hazard and the introduction of academy players to the first team.

However, Chelsea legend Frank Lampard remains the only Chelsea manager who got a special message from club owner Roman Abramovich after being sacked by the club.

The Chelsea legend was axed midway through the second season, as the team were just ninth in the Premier League when the club decided to get a new manager.

However, Thomas Tuchel later come in and win the Champions League and also seal a top four finish last season.

Frank Lampard has now revealed that he knew the sack was coming when the Chelsea board called him to the office for a meeting.

The Blues legend didn’t say much after he was sacked by the club at the time, but he has now spoken at length of his time at the club in an interview with Gary Neville.

Frank Lampard said: “Well, we’d beaten Luton in the FA Cup fourth round or whatever it was. Then the next morning I got a message from Bruce Buck, the chairman, saying: “Can you move training and come and meet us in the boardroom?” I knew straight away.

“As I say, there is no nice way to do that and there may be different ways of etiquette to do it, but at the end of the day, the result is the same.

“When I met Bruce and Marina [Granovskaia] it was very cordial. I knew what was coming then as well. Not at the time but you’re thankful for the period.

“It is what it is. They are going to move on and there’s nothing you can do there. I’ve never been in that position before, so it was a bit surreal at the time, but when you take the job, you understand that that call could come.

“At Chelsea, it probably will come unless you go and win back-to-back titles and that was never going to happen.”
