‘It’s Chelsea and it remains Chelsea’, Possible Reece James back-up reveals dream of playing for Chelsea

According to reports in France, Chelsea are considering a move for Lens right-back Jonathan Clauss.

Following the exits of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen, Thomas Tuchel will need to bolster his defense in all areas ahead of the new season, while Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso may potentially leave before the conclusion of the window.

On Chelsea’s right wing, Azpilicueta excelled at covering for Reece James, but according to French daily La Voix du Nord, the club is eyeing Clauss as a replacement if the Spaniard leaves.

Chelsea have reportedly been watching Clauss’ performances in Ligue 1, while Lens are willing to trade the 29-year-old if their €10 million (£8.5m) valuation is fulfilled, according to the article.

Clauss was Lens’ best performer in Ligue 1 previous season, assisting on 11 goals and scoring five himself.

Marquinhos, William Saliba, and Kylian Mbappe were also named to Ligue 1’s Team of the Season, which included the right-back.

Clauss’ contract with Lens expires after one year, and he has no plans to renew it because he has drawn interest from Marseille, Atletico Madrid, and Chelsea.

During an interview with RMC Sport in May, Clauss was asked what club he dreamt of joining.

‘Since I was a kid, It’s Chelsea and it remains Chelsea,’ he replied.

Clauss has been capped four times by France’s national team and is pushing to secure a place in Didier Deschamps’ squad for their World Cup campaign later this year.
